About this property
A spacious 5 bedroom mid-century link detached house, just off Bishopthorpe’s Main Street, with large, secluded gardens.
DESCRIPTION Located on The Courtyard in the charming village of Bishopthorpe, the house was a bespoke design by renowned local architect Tom Adams, and is an outstanding example of the mid-century architecture of the period. His style was to create light, open-plan spaces, with carefully placed windows that connect the internal space to the large orchard garden.
Inspired by these design principles the house was recently renovated and remodelled by award winning architects Millar+Howard Workshop, to update and improve the interior. The result is a generously proportioned, open plan space that utilises 21st century fixtures and fittings but remains true to the building’s 1960s roots. Some intelligent reconfiguring of the layout has created an atrium, connecting the living room to the first floor. At first floor level, the impressive study doubles up as a 5th double bedroom when required, with the option of opening or closing part of one wall on to the atrium.
The electrics, plumbing and boiler have all been upgraded within the past 3 years and the windows are modern timber double-glazed units.
ACCOMMODATION To the ground floor:
Storm porch; hall, kitchen, dining room open to living room; sitting room; guest WC, utility room; integral garage.
On the first floor:
Open landing overlooking the dining area; 5 double bedrooms (one used as a study), house bathroom, further shower room.
OUTSIDE At the rear is a spacious and secluded garden, believed originally to have formed part of an orchard and still retaining various mature apple trees, including a Ribston Pippin (a local Yorkshire variety), Worcester, Bramley and Cox, as well as a Victoria plum. Because of its size and placement it enjoys sun throughout the day. Much of the garden is lawned, with mature shrubs, a large Magnolia tree, and herbaceous borders which have been carefully planned to ensure colour throughout the year. There is an ornamental pond, patio section and loads of space for children to play (even a tree house) or host parties.
At the front is a driveway with parking for 2 cars, bordered by front gardens with lawns and flowerbeds.
LOCAL AREA The Courtyard is a prestigious address in a very popular village. It lies towards the eastern end of Main Street where it slopes gently up to form a really quiet cul de sac, comprising just 5 houses.
Bishopthorpe itself has become one of York’s most sought-after villages – with good reason. Both the local infant and junior schools are excellent and senior school catchment offers the choice of Fulford, Tadcaster Grammar or Millthorpe. Access into York (just over 3 miles away) is simple, either by car, bicycle or via the half hourly bus services. For those needing access further afield, the A64 is only a mile or so away by car and Leeds around 22 miles.
The village is extremely well-served by a range of amenities – 3 good pubs, various shops, hairdressers and barbers, chippie, library, doctors surgery, dentists, butchers, cafes and more.
